annual salary in a show of solidarity with furloughed federal workers. the white house has said that thousands of government employees are seeing pay cuts or furloughs as a result of sequestration. the president's salary is 400,000. so he'll return more than 1600 to the treasury every month. authorities in west virginia have arrested a suspect in a fatal shooting of a sheriff today. investigators say sheriff walter crum was sitting in a marked patrol car when a man walked up and opened fire. a witness called 911 with the license number of the gunman's car. deputies chased the car and forced it to the side of the road. one of the deputies shot and wounded the driver. the driver is now hospitalized. but there is no word tonight on his condition. a napa police officer shot and wounded a suspect last

night. investigators say 37-year-old pablo ramirez was wanted for assault with a deadly weapon. the officer was working with the county's special investigation bureau. >> when the agents approached the car to arrest the man, a struggle ensued between the suspect and the officer, and a shot was fired, striking the suspect. >> the county sheriff's department is investigating the shooting. no word on whether ramirez had a weapon or if the other two men were arrested. ramirez is expected to survive. bart investigators are looking into a death on the tracks. the person was hit on oakland's 12th street station a little after 9 this morning. bart has not yet released any details about the victim or why they were on the tracks. service was affected during the investigation, and service there resumed around 12:30.

we are learning new information about the driver shot in the bizarre attack in the oakland hills that we first brought you yesterday. kristin joins us now with more about this off-duty paramedic as police search for more clues about the shooting. >> reporter: the latest report from police is that quinn boyer is still in critical condition here at the hospital. friends and colleagues are hoping for the best, and police are hoping to catch whoever shot him. police say this honda civic is the crime scene. the victim was shot inside this car while waiting at a stop sign. >> we are asking the public if anyone has any videos, to please contact us. >> reporter: a witness tells police the gunman got out of a brown car and opened fire. now police are looking for anyone with more information to come forward. family have identified the victim as 34-year-old quinn boyer, a paramedic working for santa clara county ambulance.

today, his company said a violent crime directed at one of their own has shaken the staff. >> our paramedics are trained to help patients, to be on the scene and help people. now we're having to deal with one of our own, who was in that situation. >> reporter: police aren't officially commenting on a motive, but a law enforcement source tells us that when a first responder arrived on the scene, he mumbled the words, he tried to rob me. >> it's one of those type of cases, it's an important case for us. >> reporter: so far, there is still just that limited description of the getaway vehicle, a brown car. at this point, there still isn't even word whether or not the gunman was acting alone or if there was a getaway driver. clearly, oakland police want to hear from you if you have any information about this case. as we mentioned at the top of this newscast, air force one is on its way to the bay area. the president should arrive

about 5:25 this evening. he's going to be greeted by a lot of protesters who are angry about a number of different issues. eric rasmussen has more now from san francisco. he's with some of those protesters. eric? >> reporter: and frank, they are starting to gather here tonight at pacific heights. easily more than 100 here and more arriving by the minute. the ones that are already here have had to be on the move as well in the last hour. secret service and police have been pushing them back from the area around the getty house, where president obama will be later this evening for a democratic fund-raiser. the same event raised $1.7 million last year. the focus of many protesters out here, as you can see and hear, is the proposed keystone oil pipeline. >> we stand out here on the corner at this fund-raiser, do you think it will make any difference? >> it's all about people power tonight. and we are going to be here with thousands of people this evening, saying no to the

keystone pipeline and no the drone warfare. >> reporter: again, as we come back out live, a lot of issues being protested tonight. you can see banners and signs protesting that keystone oil pipeline. reporter mike has been looking into this issue more closely today, and he's at another event that the president will be attending in the city tonight, and he'll have a closer look at that issue in a few issues here at 5. we're live in san francisco, eric rasmussen, ktvu channel 2 news. home prices showed a healthy year-over-year jump in february. the data shows that while the average home price in the united states went up half a percent from january to february, it was more than 10% higher than when you compare it to last year. on wall street today, signs of weakness when it comes to the

job market and the service industry. the dow ended up losing 111 points. the s&p 500 dropped 16. a big announcement from disney today. why disney is shutting down lucasarts, which is based in the presidio. noelle? >> reporter: frank, lucasarts says some of its employees here at the gaming division will transfer to disney, but others will lose their jobs. the company isn't saying how many layoffs. it's the house that yodi built. for decades, the force seemed to be with anything that had the lucas name attached to it. but today, disney announced shutting down its offices and cancelling its video game projects. the company released a statement, saying, quote, after evaluating our position in the games market, we've decided to shift lucasarts from an internal development to a licensing model, minimizing the

company's risk while achieving a broader portfolio of quality star wars games. lucasarts had two star wars games in development, after 30 years of video game development, the division appeared to be swallowed up by the disney death star. disney acquired lucasfilm last year. they knew something big happened. >> it was gridlocked for an hour and a half. endless cars coming out of there. >> what did you think? >> i thought maybe i needed to get out of the area, that maybe they heard some news i didn't know about. >> reporter: today, there was no mass exodus. employees who acknowledged to us that they worked at lucas arts told us they were instructed not to talk about the layoff. adrian thinks the talented pool of workers here has nothing to worry about. >> i saw a new article saying

headlines recently. the battle over gay rights has come to a tiny town in arizona. the city council voted 5-2 to recognize same-sex unions. supporters and opponents packed last night's meeting under this legislation. same-sex partners will receive the same rights as married couples within the bisbee boundaries. the attorney general says the city law is unconstitutional and vows to fight it in court. a judge today sentenced a union city man to 125 years in prison for having sex with a seven-year-old girl, and also for possessing child pornography. the 39-year-old was arrested in october of 2010 after the girl told her mother about the sex. he was convicted of sex with a minor, lewd and lascivious acts against a child under 14, and possession of child pornography. the irs still finds itself

in a catch-up game. the decision making from congress last year delayed the irs from beginning its own tax processing season, and in some cases not even having enough forms available for weeks, after they're usually out, which delayed tax preparers. >> so because of that, there's been -- the numbers are slightly lower than they have been in the past, but we anticipate those numbers will catch up, and everything will continue on track as anticipated. >> it is possible to get an extension if you can't make the tax deadline. security nice and tight here in san francisco, where the president of the united states is set to arrive in a little more than an hurry. opponents of the keystone pipeline are ready and waiting. a system will soon be knocking on our door. coming up, how much rainfall you can expect in your neighborhood.

continuing coverage now of the president's bay area visit. those opposed to the keystone xcel pipeline are using this visit to protest about the project. >> reporter: well, the keystone pipeline is not set to come through san francisco, but it is still a very hot topic right here, especially in sea cliff, where security is quite tight. billionaire tom siren is hosting a cocktail party. he is a huge critic of the pipeline extension. >> one of the reasons frankly i'm excited to be here is i agree with tom stire, that the keystone pipeline is a terrible idea. >> we are huge supporters of barack and are very excited he's here. >> the president is facing one of the most major decisions on

climate of my life sometime. >> reporter: becky vaughn is talking about the keystone xcel pipeline extension. it is 1700 miles long and would carry 700,000 barrels of crude a day. it still needs the president's approval. tonight, san francisco billionaire tom stire is expected to tell the president why it should not be built. other critics, pointing to last week's exxon mobile spill, say the pipeline extension is unnecessary and poses safety risks. >> the only americans will ever see from the pipeline is the oil that spills in nebraska and oklahoma and texas, oil that we'll have to clean up. we think it's a bad deal for america and the president should say no. >> reporter: but right now, the majority of americans are saying yes. a new poll shows 66% of u.s. adults say they favor the pipeline. supporters say building the keystone extension will create jobs. tonight in sea cliff, though, some residents are just happy

to hear the president is in town. >> i think it's wonderful. >> reporter: and back live here in sea cliff, as a lot of residents -- they can't even get into their house at this hour, as everyone here is awaiting the president's arrival. again, he is expected here in the neighborhood in the 6:00 hour. the defense secretary chuck hagel said that north korea's nuclear threats present a real and clear danger. kim jong un is vowing to build a nuclear weapon. some analysts call the threats empty, but speaking at an national defense university today, chuck hagel said he wasn't willing to take that chance. >> it only takes being wrong once, and i don't want to be the secretary of defense who was wrong once. >> north korea has threatened to launch attacks against the united states. the u.s. has sent fighter jets

and warships to the korean peninsula. children from around the nation will dine with first lady michelle obama at the white house this summer. they'll be sampling original issues at the second annual kids state dinner. it has a prize and contest to promote healthy eating. the first lady's healthy lunchtime challenge is asking kids from eight to twelve, and their parents, to create nutrition lunch recipes that represent each food group. if they have a winning recipe, they get lunch with the first lady. there is news that google is set to launch a new model of its tablet. the new gadget is set to be thinner and have a higher screen resolution. mountain view's google helps to sell eight million units before the end of the year. more information is leaking

out tonight about apple's plans to launch several groundbreaking tv products. there is word itv will come in 50, 55 and 60-inch versions. the price range could be as high as $2500. the rumors come from an industry analyst, who says he's talked with apple's overseas suppliers. the company doesn't comment on upcoming products. two women from contra costa are among seven people indicted by a federal grand jury on charges stemming from a mortgage fraud scheme. the women are elsie fuller and leona yeargin of san pablo. if convicted, those two women face up to 20 years in prison and fines for their part of

that scheme. san jose mayor chuck reed has sent a personal letter to the commissioner segel. they have been trying to relocate the a's to san jose, but the giants have rejected to that proposal. >> there are people getting hard feelings, getting upset about the long they. i think the best way to deal with that is to have a conversation, figure out what issues he's got, give him the answers he wants to we can move ahead. >> a baseball spokesman said the commissioner has not yet seen the letter and would have no further comment. really beautiful day across most of the a earn today. but our meteorologist mark tamayo has been tracking the latest models. you see changes on the horizon? >> for today, pretty mild out there, especially away from the

who would have ever thought that four guys would still be playing their music before sold- out arenas? the rolling stones are coming back to the bay area. >> reporter: frank, the bay area rolling stone fans are about to get some satisfaction. the stones are set to play next month here at hp pavilion and at the oracle arena in oakland. but it's going to cost you. for days, billboards have been hinting something was up. the rolling stones' 50th anniversary tour is coming to town. the band announced they'll play may 5 at the oracle arena and may 8 at hp pavilion.

more fallout tonight over those busted bolts on the new eastern span of the bay bridge. the possible fix caltrans announced last week when it revealed the snapped safety bolts may not be the right solution. tom baker has been following the developments on this project and has learned more about what's next and more about the bolt manufacturer. >> reporter: caltrans says test results on the broken bolts will be made public in a week. an alternative fix will be unveiled in about two weeks. >> and we're looking at the remaining votes that have yet to be tensioned and seeing if those meet our standards. >> reporter: if those bolts that can be removed and tested are okay, they might still be used. if not -- >> the solution could just simply be to fabricate new bolts. >> reporter: because of this defective set of bolts, everything that the corporation has made for the entire bridge -- and that's a lot of stuff -- is now going to be reviewed. but the company maintains its silence, and that's a problem, because they make a heck of a

lot more bolts and fasteners for things other than the bay bridge. they are deeply involved in supplying parts to many facilities, including nuclear power plants, wind farms, mining and the military. though a subcontractor's liability on private construction projects is sometimes limited to replacing parts, san francisco construction defects attorney george wolfe says that's unlikely here. >> it would be unusual that they would allow a provision like that to be included in their contract. >> reporter: is the day after labor day still opening day? >> if we determine that we cannot open the bridge sely by that date, we will not open it by that date. >> reporter: that's exactly five months away. tom vacar, ktvu channel 2 news. we want to take you now live to some developing news, live at san francisco international airport, where air force one has just landed. the president, of course, in

town for a couple of big democratic fund-raisers. a few of them taking place tonight in san francisco. >> the president will be departing air force one momentarily. they'll be heading up highway 101 to san francisco for the first of those fund-raisers. it is going to be held in sea cliff. the second one will be held in pacific heights. as always, there will probably be rolling closures as the president's motorcade is moving up to san francisco. that could create some traffic problems. remember, it's 5:32 right now, right at the height of rush hour. there could also be traffic troubles in san francisco as well. and keep in mind that in sea cliff and in pacific heights, there are road closures as a result of the president's visit. >> as we've been checking in with our reporters at the various locations where president obama is expected to go, we also know that there are

protesters who are going to be outside those fund-raisers. some people are upset about the possibility of having the keystone pipeline approved. of course, they want to apply pressure on president obama to reject that controversial project. >> not exactly sure here who is going to greet the president when he departs air force one. we're gonna keep an eye on this and we'll come back, hopefully as soon as the president is departing air force one, which should be just a couple of minutes from now. korean auto makers hyundai and kia are recalling nearly two million vehicles is. 1.7 million through 2007 through 2011 model years have a problem with the brake light switch. another 200,000 are hyundai elans. they could have an air bag problem. berkeley police hope a surveillance photo can help in their search for an armed robbery suspect. police say this man is

suspected of robbing another man at gunpoint last month. he demanded the victim's property, then pistol-whipped him. the suspect was last seen getting on to an ac transit bus. anyone who has seen him is asked to call the berkeley police department. ktvu caught up with senator feinstein. >> we are not going to sit and take an attack. and i think that ought to be well understood. >> she went on to say that it makes no sense for north korea to follow through with its threats. your tax money, spent to fly federal judges to kansas city, for a conversation event that included a basketball- themed party. scott macfarlane unearthed the story from washington, d.c. it is a story you will see only on

ktvu. >> reporter: college basketball experience in kansas city, this is where federal judges in the midwest were invited, the first night of a judicial conference that your tax dollars helped pay for. the invitation reads, come join us center court for cocktails and experience the many hands- on basketball events. including slam dunk competitions on courts with rims at six different heights. the bulk of the three-day conference featured meetings between judges, plus scheduled seminars. supreme court justice was scheduled too, but i'm told he cancelled. there was a special elton john event too. they say the judges would have paid their own way for the basketball and music. but taxpayer advocates warn

that taxpayers pay to fly judges into town and pay for their hotel accommodations too. federal judges in the ninth circuit took heat last summer for their conference in maui. >> these dollars do not belong to us. they belong to the american people. >> reporter: of course, a spokesman says the cost to taxpayers for the kansas city conference is still unknown. a similar event cost more than $100,000 tax dollars. the u.s. state department is hoping that a $5 million cash reward will lead to the capture of war criminals in central africa, including joseph coney. he and his gang steal children and then force them to fight with his troops. they are considered to be killers, rapist, torturers and looters. the state department says cash rewards have been helpful in capturing other war criminals, so it's time to up the ante

rutgers university today fired head basketball coach mike rice, after that video surfaced showing him pushing and taunting players and making homophobic remarks. espn broadcast a video clip taken from practices between 2010 and 2012. the clip quickly went viral, and rice was quickly out of a job. today he apologized. >> i can't say anything right now except i'm sorry and there will never been a time where i'm going to use any of that as an excuse, nor will there be any excuse. i let so many people down. >> university officials apparently saw this tape almost four months ago, suspending rice for three games, and

fining him $50,000. at that time, though, the university did not explain the reason for his punishment. just about every athlete we spoke to today knew all about what he did. john is here with their blunt reactions. >> reporter: we went to the cal campus and to a neighborhood basketball court in oakland. most people we met had not only seen the videos but had strong feelings about coach rice's behavior. the cal marching band performed this afternoon. >> me? nervous? no, no! >> reporter: i asked coach lindsey gottlieb about the rutgers coach and his behavior. >> there's no place for anything that's, you know, clearly over the line. >> reporter: gottlieb then explained her approach to coaching. >> i feel like i have a wonderful opportunity as a basketball coach, and a platform to affect the lives of

tomorrow morning. the rain time line, basically for the entire bay area, heaviest rain, the moderate to heavy rain, that's scheduled for the morning commute tomorrow. then by 12:00, scattered showers. we scale back on the coverage and intensity throughout the day. the main impacts will be first thing tomorrow morning. high clouds will be on the increase for tonight. the rainfall will be approaching. some of the expectations with the rainfall, as we said, it picks up between about 3 and 8:00 tomorrow morning. the heaviest downpours in the coastal hills, approaching three quarters of an inch. as the front moves through, the organized rainfall becomes more scattered. so there should be more breaks throughout the day. here is the updated forecast model, showing you the high clouds for tonight. we'll take this into tomorrow morning. we're basically covered with at least a moderate downpour. we'll be here tomorrow morning

federal investigators say as much as $700 million earmarked to help families following hurrican katrina and rita may have been misspent. the money was intended to help some 24,000 families in louisiana elevate their homes.

but a report says some homeowners used the money for something else, while others didn't document what work had been done. hud says the state is responsible for make sure the money is properly spent. the coast guard has carried out a major drug bust off the southern california coast. they seized more than three tons of america from a drug smuggler's boat in the waters off catalina island. that's just about 160 miles from los angeles. when the smugglers spotted the coast guard plane, officials say they began tossing some of these, 250 of them in fact, bales of pot, overboard, as they fled back into mexican territorial waters. >> we were not able to catch them. there was a low cloud layer that night. so unfortunately, the traffickers did make it back. >> according to the coast

guard, the value of the marijuana seized is about $5 million. the search effort for two lost hikers in southern california continued today with helicopter crews once again helping search teams on the ground. 19-year-old nicholas sedoya and 18-year-old kendall jack were last heard from when they called from a cell phone. the phone's battery later died. they are lost somewhere in a canyon in southern orange county. after three days, there are fears that the pair may be dehydrated. searchers are optimistic they'll find the way. the senate transportation and housing committee voted unanimously to designate a portion of the highway in honor of officer kapoo. he was killed in november of 2011 as he was chasing after a bank robbery suspect.
